Ok this was a little freaky in a small-world kind of way. My daughter had her appointment to begin day treatment at a nearby psychiatric facility this morning. We had to go to the admissions building and take care of a bunch of paperwork first and that took a couple of hrs before we could go to the hall where they have the adolescent unit. She has been in this facility before; it’s okay for its outpatient psych program though I don’t know how well they do at treating substance abuse and related issues. I would have preferred her to go inpatient but she refused to even discuss the idea, and no residential facility would take her without her consent.
So anyway… we went over to the unit and we were waiting to meet with some people that run the program, when a couple of people walk by in the hall. My daughter and I both notice one girl and look at each other. We both think she looks like a girl we know. I was a Girl Scout Leader a few years back and this girl was in our troop with my daughter. We used to live on the same block years ago (my mom still lives there, for a few more months anyway). My daughter is convinced that it’s the same girl; I’m thinking it’s just one of those cases of everyone having a twin out there somewhere. This girl was never a troublemaker growing up.
Another funny thing was, when we picked my daughter up from the hospital yesterday I had my mom with me and we had to drive her home. When I pulled onto my mom’s block, I saw this girl’s mom in her car and waved a quick hello to her. We would have stopped to talk but another car was trying to get thru. We just did one of those How-are-you?-Fine things. And my daughter was quick to tell me not to tell her what had happened with her.
Well when my daughter got home today the first thing she said was that it WAS the girl we know. She had spent the whole day talking to her. I was really surprised. She’s only supposed to be there for five days and I think tomorrow is her last day. She’s not taking the bus/van/whatever transportation they offer; her mom is driving her in each day. I can’t imagine doing that with three other kids to look after. The hospital’s not in the same town, actually it’s just out of our county. I’d rather let them drive my daughter. She’ll probably be there for 2 weeks or so. That’s what they are telling me today anyway, things can always change.
